Planet can be representative of traits and sometimes personality, but mostly determine when things happen the the people with their sign, in this case Cancer.
People with Cardinal Signs tend to be initiators (as all the Signs in it corrospond with the begining of the seasons), people who are the first or who start something. Water is a feminine and maternal element. It's illogical and has no shape. So it penetrates deeply, seeps into everything, especialy feelings. But it has trouble with boundaries.

Serena meaning "tranquil" from the Latin word serenus. This was the name of an early saint, who is not very well known.
~Birthstone and Birth Flower~
Serena's Birthstone is the Pearl, for the month of June. According to mythology, Pearls were tears from the Moon that fell into the ocean, because of their color (black, white, and otherwise) and shiny surface. Ancient, and in some cases modern, Chinese beleived that they had the ability to perpetuate youth, even eternal youth. Pearls symbolize chastity, purity, modesty, and a happy marriage.
Serena's Birth Flower is the rose, also for the month of June, which symbolizes the beauty of youth.
My analysis:
I think Sailor Moon fits the profile set for her by the stars well, not perfectly, but very, very well.
